Shingles

Shingles, also known as herpes zoster, is an infection of a nerve and the skin around it.
It’s caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which also causes chickenpox.

Why this PGD?

This PGD authorises the Zostavax® vaccines which can be administered to patients who are over 50 years of age and are at risk of shingles. The PGD provides the means to produce a private vaccination service for shingles, for patients over 50, many of whom are not eligible for vaccination on the NHS.

Early treatment may help reduce the severity of your symptoms and the risk of developing complications.

What is Shingles?

Shingles is an illness that mainly impacts older patients. It’s characterised by a painful itchy rash that can include fluid-filled blisters. These are combined with a burning pain, chills, fever headache and potentially an upset stomach. It’s dangerous for many people because of the long term complications that can include long term nerve pain, vision problems, hearing loss and persistent difficulty of movement.

If you’re at a higher risk of catching shingles we highly recommend you consider getting the Shingles vaccine. Book your appointment online with Orion Pharmacy today.
