Diphtheria is transmitted through saliva and mucous and is extremely contagious. It can cause a high fever, sore throat, difficulties breathing, and a thick membrane covering the throat. Diphtheria can be fatal and it is important to check your vaccines are up to date before travelling to a high-risk area. Common areas that have high instances include Indonesia, India, South America and Africa.
Tetanus is a bacterial infection that usually occurs if harmful bacteria enter an open wound, especially animal bites. If left untreated, it could be fatal. Tetanus causes painful tightening of the muscles and can make it difficult to swallow and breathe.
Polio is a viral infection that was very common in the 1940s and 50s, but it no longer exists in the UK. If you were born in the UK you were probably vaccinated against Polio. However, if you travel to a country that still has cases of Polio, you will need a booster. There’s still an extremely small risk of catching Polio when travelling in a country where polio is still found, for example Afghanistan and Pakistan.
