Yellow fever is a serious, potentially deadly flu-like disease spread by mosquitoes infected by Aedes aegypti. Yellow Fever is characterised by a dangerously high fever and jaundice. Jaundice is the yellowing of the skin and eyes, which is where the disease gets it’s name Yellow Fever.
The good news is that the disease is preventable with a single dose of the Yellow Fever vaccine which provides immunity for life. If you’re travelling to a place where the disease is common, it’s worth taking the time to get vaccinated than risk becoming ill.
Ultimately, there is no cure for Yellow Fever, and the virus can be fatal in up to 50% of people who have severe symptoms, this is why we strongly encourage patients to get the vaccine if they can.
