What is Japanese-encephalitis?

Japanese encephalitis is a viral illness spread by mosquitoes. While the virus is present in pigs and birds, humans can only get it through mosquito bites.

You can’t catch it from another person. Most people who get the virus will have mild symptoms or none at all, but it can lead to serious health issues for some.

The risk of getting Japanese encephalitis also depends on the time of year you travel. Mosquitoes are more common during the rainy season, which increases the chance of getting the disease.

Top Tips For Protecting Against Japanese Encephalitis

Besides the vaccine there are things you can do to help lower your risk of catching Japanese Encephalitis while you travel.

  • Avoid spending too much time in locations close to pig farms or rice fields.
  • Ensure you are adequately covered with Insect repellent to keep mosquitos at bay
  • Mosquito nets and long-sleeved clothing will help you stay safe when travelling to an encephalitis area. Using nets over your sleeping area can help keep you safe at night.
  • If possible you may also wish to travel outside the rainy season to limit your exposure to mosquitoes and the infections they carry.
  • Sleeping with the fan on high
  • Using plugin vaporisers
